I’m discovering new people, places and things, and this weekend was no exception. I attended Noname’s concert on her Everything is Everything tour and it was unlike any show I’ve ever experienced!
The concert was held in Lawrence, Kansas, a quaint college town not far from Kansas City, Missouri, filled with an eclectic mix of students and locals alike. I was running a bit late, but that’s nothing out of the ordinary. When I arrived at Liberty Hall, where the concert was being held, I was comforted by the crowd of attendees who were also arriving fashionably late. I made my way to the floor with a few minutes to spare before the show began.
Before I knew it, the lights were diming, and the show opener was taking the stage. Arima Eddera set the tone for the show and dazzled the audience with her beautifully impressive range. This was my first time hearing her music and I was thoroughly impressed. She performed her set with one guitarist, and a few numbers acapella. I spotted a few crowd-goers adding her to their Spotify playlist, and I was right there with them.
When Noname took the stage, the crowd went wild. Her show was an interactive experience from beginning to end, and Liberty Hall provided the perfect intimate setting for an up-close and personal show. If you thought you were coming simply to watch and listen, think again. Noname wouldn’t have it. Get your vocals together and a good stretch in because we were singing, rapping, and bouncing all night.
“When the sun is going down, and the dark is out to stay, I picture your smile—like it was yesterday.”
As strange as it sounds, my favorite part of the evening was by far the end of the show. After Noname and the band exited the stage, the audience alternated chants roaring “one more song!” and “encore!” and to my surprise she returned to the stage and did just that. With no band, Noname took the stage smiling from ear-to-ear and delivered an encore from her latest album, Telefone. She performed “Yesterday” acapella and the crowd loved every second. It was the perfect end to the night.
